3 lipsticks in one day!

Morning time lips....Revlon's Nude Attitude

Lunchtime statement lips in Revlon's Strawberry Suede

Stunning dinner mouth in Revlon's Wine Not.....Wow factor galore!

Ok...so Mulain was meant to run around the stores today checking what's 'out there' in the make-up world. Confession....I got stuck at the Revlon counter testing all their new Matt lipsticks for a long time....so many lovely shades to try out.....just could n't decide which one to get so got 3! The great thing about Revlon is it does n't break the bank....so I did n't feel too bad treating myself here. Decided on a neutral shade 'Nude Attitude' to start the day....then decided on a fabulous red 'Strawberry Suede' to add glamour to a lunch-do or midday meeting.....and fell in love with a vampy dark colour called 'Wine Not' for a deadly night, party, dinner look. How easy to put on and change my look! Instant pick-me-up and creatively fun. With each shade it brings out a new avatar of me.....understated chic....confident class....devastating glamour....how clever, thank you Revlon.
Off to meet the girls, with my wonderul new red mouth....shooting, shooting and more shooting...my the MUs are busy....roll on 2010!

Culture Vulture

Mulain has just returned from the Pink City, yes that's Jaipur my friends, and the Literary Festival. What a weekend...my god....completely gets you inspired, mentally refreshed and tuned in to the world around us.....great location, fantastic speakers, lovely crowd....Wunderbar. Saw Roddy Doyle, Niall Ferguson, Louis De Bernieres, Tina Brown, Stephen Freyers and many more......Mulain ran into a friend who was surprized that I was there...meaning....'you! a make-up artist...at a literary do'?.....'ow narrow-minded eh? I 'ave a brain like everyone else, I write a blog everyday, I read whenever I can.....how silly....think people really think we are all fluffy and talk only about 'colours' and 'lipsticks' and 'gloss'.....shame on them all....and that goes for us too my darlings....we must really not judge people....we are always proved wrong....
Mulain and the team are back to the city with a bump and getting ready for more shoots and weddings.....who said the wedding season is over? Not at all....it's always wedding season my darlings....
Ok....tomorrow will be checking out what's in the stores make-up wise and see if I can spot any goodies for us all..

Brush 217!

A brush us artistes could n't be without...MAC brush No. 217!!! Mwah..mwah...mwah...we at fat mu hq love you! MAC's website describes this brush in the following way...."For shading or blending of colour or creamy products. This brush has fine, densely packed fibers that are arranged in an oval shape. M·A·C professional brushes are hand-sculpted and assembled using the finest quality materials. They feature wood handles and nickel-plated brass ferrules..". This brush is oh-so-much-more...a blending dream and wash paradise for artists, it takes away any edges, gives you the subtlety and understatedness you sometimes need for your work plus is super easy to handle and delicate on the eye-lids.....if you go onto YouTube or Google and type in the No.217 you can read the reviews yourselves and see the brush tutorials devoted to this little number. Just marvellous....an artist is nothing without tools....they are an extension of us my darlings....treat them well and they will be with you for life! So we recommend this little treasure for sure...just watch how it transforms your work.

Rehydrate your skin!

Having lovely, comfortable skin is a mu-st for all of us....professionals or non-professionals.....it's just an everyday essential I feel. We feel so good if our skin is having a good day! So as always, Mulain is here to tell you about a top product which will make your life easier and all the more wonderful. I discoverd Body Moisture Spray by Sanctuary quite by accident a few years ago....picked up the bottle (good packaging), read the back, liked the sound of it and thought it quite affordable. I have never looked back personally or professionally, and have used it on many a shoot! It has a fragrant, feather light oil which instantly nourishes and conditions thirsty skin, all with a few spritzs. Moisturising Sweet Almond Oil, smoothing Jojoba and antioxidant Vitamin E are quickly absorbed to leave skin hydrated, soft and glowing with a healthy sheen, just fabulous in these drying Winter months...plus the smell is just divine and intoxicating to the senses....

Here is the science / tech bit........Jojoba A is a light, natural emollient. It is said to mimic the action of sebum, which is the skins own lubricant. It helps to moisturise the skin and therefore promotes a radiant complexion. Sweet Almond Oil has a fine texture, is easily absorbed and helps to leave the skin soft and satiny smooth. Vitamin E is an antioxidant and is a fat soluble Vitamin that maintains cell membranes. It traps and neutralises free radicals created by the environment and offers good protection for the skin.

For home use it's easy to use....and super fast for people on-the-go...like us my friends! Especially lovely after a hot shower when skin needs that instant hydration. It just glides on...just spray lightly onto clean skin and smooth in gently for a speedy moisture boost.

On shoots it's great for make-up artists who want a light sheen on the body and not a heavily oiled look. Plus you can carry it in your set-bag on standby should you ever need it, the top makes it leak proof...always a must with any oils...otherwise it's a big mess.

It is not too pricey either 500 Rs.....but...you can't get it in India....yet! Check out the Sanctuary website...http://www.thesanctuary.co.uk/our-story.htm.....and see what other yummy stuff they have too.....it's a Spa paradise, really.. find someone who travels and give them a shopping list!

Right off to the office.....lots to do....re-shoots for our soon to be released movie of 2010....plus new looks to design....another exciting day in MU town!

Golden Globe Beauty!

Mulain thought Madesmoiselle Drew Barrymore looked so loo-verly and feminine and polished and sophisticated and dazzling (I could go on) on the night of The Golden Globes...with so many other leading ladies also looking quite splendid also, tricky to pick out a favourite. What Mulain liked from this look is it's understated glamour......she played down the colours and went for a nude / light / natural colour palette...and it worked! Beautiful skin, lovely soft eyes and a slight colour on the cheeks and lips to lift the look slightly. Bravo Drew....Mulain is quite a fan. Seems that most of the leading ladies chose nude nails as a common trend......nothing to outshine the Golden Gong it seems....!
Mulain says try Lakme's Classic nail polish in Nude D18, Sheer Nude Tropical Island Collection in 029 or if you want to splash out try Chanel's Inattendu 503, for a classic nude.

Colour theory.....

Mulain and the MUs were chatting today, as we are fine-tuning our professional course...and we all agreed just how important 'colour theory' is with regards to our work. All make-up artists must understand the world of colour to really become the best artist they can be. So ask yourselves....do you know what the Primary Colours are....? What is a tint? ....What is a hue? What are warm or cool colours....if you cannot answer any of the above then you must called Mulain right now to book up on our course!...If you know a leetle bit ....still not good enough....you must know all of it! It will only help you in your work my friends from films to the beauty counter. Buy a little pad and water-colour set and start mixing colours and seeing what happpens....experiment and the world of colour will start to appear before your very eyes.....

Education and knowledge are so important my darlings.....as are practice and practice and more practice...and even more.....

Mulain is off for to finish his painting he is doing....will post when done....my masterpiece...'Dada in Dadar'......don't know what Dada-ism is?....shame on you artists....google it!

The power of green!

Mulain has just spent a glorious weekend in the countryside of Maharashtra.....surrounded by trees, butterflies, lizards, flora....so soothing for the soul my friends and what clean air! Oh la la...... And after watching Avatar 3D and knowing how important it is having 'green' in your life....it is not just nice my darlings...it is essential to our well-being. So what if you can't get out of the city to feel nature and breathe properly...get some plants in your flat! Learn to nurture and appreciate them. Watch Discovery Channel, National Geographic...tap in whenever you can....look after the planet and it will look after you...mu-tual respect is needed my friends. Check out the Greenpeace website to see how you can help your environment and see http://www.greenpeople.co.uk/ to observe how some cosmetic companies keep it all safe and green.
We are getting more and more enquiries at fat mu HQ about mineral make-up and going natural...so keep you eyes and ears peeled my friends and go as natural as you can....a rose water spritz from good old Fabb India is a good way to start.
A much refreshed Mulain x

How to keep up with the make-up times?....obviously YouTube tutorials help but Mulain also recommends getting / viewing Make-up Artist Magazine.....it's full of industry news from around the world. From fashion make-up, to tools, latest products, awards, films, techniques, tips, interviews, SFX, Q&As...it will keep you in the loop (par example find out what Rick Baker and Pat Mcgrath say) and will keep adding to your knowledge....and what is knowledge my friends?....that's right....power! Kites!

Mulain says...let's go fly a kite...up to the highest height, let's go fly a kite and send it soaring...tra la la.....What a wonderful day it is today in India...it's the kite festival when kids and anyone who loo-ves colours and fun is out flying their kites.....what an inspiring sight....India is the land of colour yes, but today it looks something else...the sky is filled with rainbow delights. Flashes of pink, blue, yellow.....glimpses of green, purple, red....Mulain and the team just love it. As an artist you will love it for the colours....imprint those on your creative mind and put them on your next face!
Can't fly a kite today?.....no worry....pop on Mary Poppins and watch them in action at the end or watch the poignant, sorrowful Kite Runner......

Life is a cabaret old chum!

"What good is sitting alone in your room? Come hear the music play. Life is a Cabaret, old chum, Come to the Cabaret. Put down the knitting, The book and the broom. It's time for a holiday....tra la la"......

Mulain just loov-es Liza Minelli....what a voice and talent and what a fab blue eye-shadow, lashes and beauty spot she sports. To get this look follow Mulain's tips....

http://www.illamasqua.com/collections/1920s-berlin/
You'll need a lovely blue eyeshadow - try NYC at New Beauty Centre, they do a great little blue trio set. A red lipstick (Lakme, L'Oreal), an uber-lash mascara (Maybelline, L'Oreal), black kohl (Max Factor) and lots of attitude, heels and a hat! Brush on a generous layer of the pale blue shadow all over your lid and right up to your brow bone. Don't be shy, this is a cabaret look. With your black kohl draw a line along the top of your lash line and below, and inside on the inner rim. Be old, go as strong as you dare. The blue trio set has a darker blue shadow, using a contour brush add some into the socket line to create some definition. Layer on the mascara, more, more, more! Choose your beauty spot area...eye or lip area is popular..sharpen your kohl pencil and dab one on....it's a beauty spot NOT mole so easy does it. Red lipstick of course and a dash of rouge on the cheeks for a 'stage' look. Ready......All dressed up and nowhere to go?....No matter...do what Mulain does, crank up the volume knob on your i-pod, your speakers, cassette walkman, ghetto-blaster and DANCE!!!!!! Like no-one is looking.....so much fun and keeps you fit...good exercise for the soul. Mulain is doing it to Robbie William's 'Reality Killed the Video Star'....brilliant stuff.
If you 're in London try make-up brand Illamaqua (Selfridges), they had a whole collection with 20s Berlin in mind...same feel as Cabaret...great products, the real art of make-up is promoted here...become your alter-ego.....mine is definitely Liza M....what is yours?

B.C. Beauty!

Mulain was tickled today to hear that 'Neathanderthals' may have worn make-up!..Oh la la....I thought Wilma Flintstone was at the forefront of the cosmetic industry for that time.....mais non, it appears British experts have discovered shells that may have been used as containers for colours, approximately 75,000 B.C.....So move over Cleopatra and her black cat eye and enter the foreward thinking Neanderthals.....These scientists found lumps of a yellow pigment, that they say was possibly used as a foundation (Max Factor eat your heart out)...they also found red powder mixed up with flecks of a reflective brilliant black mineral. The shells were coated with residues of mixed pigments so definitely used for mixing and even some of the sculpted, brightly coloured shells may also have been worn by Neanderthals as jewellery (how versatile)....

Until now it had been thought by many researchers that only modern humans wore make-up for decoration and ritual purposes but now we could have got it all wrong.....check out the shells ...tres cool.....and a modern construction of how a female Neanderthal would have looked....not exactly a honey in our today's beauty world...but possibly a Paris Hilton of her day....who would easily have won an arm-wrestle with Arnie....hands down.

A 'Lay-dee' back then....a sort of Lord of the Rings look meets Hilary Duff? Sort of....
Ok - off for my relaxing Sunday siesta.....'ope you are relaxing too my friends...

Shiseido Goldlights!

Mulain noticed a fabulous little beauty pick-up from Shopper's Stop, Linking Road...(obviously available from all over our global vill-age too).....the MU's are big fans of the brand Shiseido so always on the look out for anything new. We 'ave, at fat mu hq some of these in fab colours, with a wonderful texture...now they have introduced gold and silver to the Indian market. Just stunning colours...but Mulain loved the gold....a-m-a-z-i-n-g on Indian skins! Plus crease resistent, easy to apply and has great staying power on the lid. Voila...loo-verly! So if you are out tonight and want something to pop your look - Mulain says choose this little gem, you will surely stand out my darlings.

Lots of other lovely colours - but j'aime Le Goldlights my dears...
The MUs are off for an important pitch now....a very exciting project...but mum's the word.....hope your Saturday is good.....and dazzling......and full of disco-balls!

Black cherry lips....Mwah!

YSL's Pur Black Gloss.....yes it's 09 but use it in 2010!

Mulain says get ready to mix it up....yes we have the current trend of red lips or the scarlet season as it's going to be called. You will be spoilt for choice my dears...so much red out there ... MWAH!.... Love it, love it, love it!

YSL's Red Taboo!

So to mix and match, have fun, explore, add drama, grab attention, be creative why not take a red lipstick like YSL's Red Taboo and mix it with the YSL Black Pur Gloss which stole the show last year on all the ramps. Create a loo-verly black cherry colour. Sort of gothic and mysterious with a Mati Hari twist. Mulain swears you will surely get tongues wagging and heads turning...in a good way not a Bride of Wilderstein way. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-516768/Is-scariest-picture-EVER-Bride-Wildenstein.html.........Oh la la!

You can also take that black gloss and use it on top of anything....oranges, peaches, corals, pinks, lilacs....have fun and see if you can revamp some old colours that have been sitting in your make-up kit. It's time for re-invention and fun my dears. Just head to Shopper's Stop and have a play and get a feel for it.

Mulain is off to Bandra now meeting MU Virginia to help her at fat mu HQ. Natasha and the team are shooting a Dove commercial in glamourous Madh Island....know she is itching to tell you about her Dubai experience....do watch this space.

Revlon Matte Collection!

Beautiful matte textures.......old movie-star glam!

Matte lips, eye pencils, cheeks, shadows...loov-erly

Mulain's favourite today..... Venetian Blue!

Mulain went on a hunt today to see what's new out on the Indian scene, so ventured into Linking Road's Bandra Shopper's Stop. After recovering from the atack of the perfume army at the door!!.... I felt calm enough to approach the beauty counters. Mulain is very fussy now when looking for products, I only want one person helping me and demo-ing NOT five frenzied sales-demons. It can be quite insane. I went from YSL, to Elizabeth Arden, to Lancome, to Shiseido, to Maybelline, Revlon, Lakme and Chambor....it's quite exhausting you know.
I 'ave to say the star of the day for me was Revlon and their lovely sales assistant. She expertly and nicely showed me new products, not too pushy either. I was given a little booklet and she explained to me what was new and the colour ranges. Tres bien Revlon. Must say it's nice to see another texture from the shimmers and glosses and cremes that are out there....Revlon have returned to good old dependable Matte make-up. Matte lipsticks, Matte Powder Blush, Matte Eye Shadow, Luxurious Colour Matte Kohl Eyeliner....below are the colour ranges....
Lipsticks - 12 shades with great names!
Wine Not, Really Red, Fabulous Fig, Mauve It Over, Pink Pout, Cocoa Craving, Rose Dew, Twinkled Mauve, Chocolate Kiss, Misty Rust, Sparkling Spice, Eclair Bite....
They glide on effortlessly giving a rich, beautiful matte colour without drag, cakiness or resistence!
Mulain's fave: Really Red....it's vibrant, very 2010 and totally stunning.
Blush Powder - 2 neutral shades
Perfectly Peach and Blushing Berry
Brushes onto cheeks smoothly and effortlessly for a soft matte look and a smooth, even finish.
Mulain's fave: Both! :)
Eyeliner - 3 shades
Black truffle, Midnight Blue, Very Violet
Glides on smoothly with intense matte colour and has a versatile formula and ultra-soft smudger which allows multiple eye looks from precise to smokey. Also sensitive enough for lens wearers...good non?
Mulain's fave: Midnight Blue....let's change from black non?
Eye Shadow - 4 shades
Peach Sorbet, Venetian Blue, Tempting Teal, Aubergine
Suede-like powder eye shadow glides over lids providing high impact colour and a soft matte finish. All shades enable you to create a multiude of beauty looks.
So voila - totally user friendly and easy on the purse! Really......too good.
Mulain's fave: Venetian Blue...probably because the charming sales assistant was wearing it and it looked great on Indian Skin.
Will chat about the super-duper black YSL gloss I got and their Scarlet Red lipstick tomorrow...it's quite a combo....will leave you to absorb the matte look for today....don't want to overload you with too much information my darlings...especially as we are all still recovering from New Year non?
Or is that just me....ummm

Glam up!

New from Bobbi Brown are these fabulous new glittery cream eye shadows... easy to apply these are great for an instant glam up without the fuss.... AND it avoids getting glitter all over you...! BIG plus that!

From shimmery nudes to dark navy, chrome and gold tones... these little pots come in 8 different shades ... so wear it nude just for a hint of sparkle or go darker to create a lovely smokey effect... whatever floats your boat....!

The product glides on beautifully so its probably easiest and best to apply with your fingers and blend so you have control over how light/ dark/ smudgy/ smokey you want to go or layer on with a brush for a full on dramatic eye effect. A winner both ways... something you want to look into... I know I have....goldstone and starry night being my favourites.

Team it up with gloss or even better red lipstick.... depending on your mood ... but have fun with it and start experimenting with your looks people you might be surprised at what looks good! Make up after all is about looking good, feeling good and having fun!!

Enjoy.....

Maybel-ine....thank you!

What a wonderful mascara!!!

All the mascaras we take for granted....

Mulain was thinking this morning about being in 2010! Wow...sounds so futuristic non? Imagine it's one hundred years ago .....zut alors...seems like a long time ago non? And imagine what was on the make-up scene then? Not much I can tell you that....was thinking just how mu-ch we take things for granted in our everyday 2010 lives ......we have access to anything we want, from the shops or on-line, super spoilt for choice. Did you know women in 1910 made their own mascara to give them fuller lashes? A bit of petroleum jelly and coal dust et voila.....lashes to die for! Bet you did n't know Maybelline were the inventors of mascara either? (Mulain is a leetle font of knowledge my friends, not just a pretty face).......1910 - 1920 saw a huge breakthrough in the world of le maquillage......A New York chemist T.L. Williams in 1915. Williams, then in his early 20s, noticed his younger sister applying the jelly and coal dust to her eyelashes to give them a darker, fuller look. So like a good, loving brother, he adapted it in his small lab and made a product sold locally called Lash-Brow-Ine. The product was a local hit, but the awkward name held it back. His sister, who inspired the product, was named Maybel. So Monsieur Williams re-named it Maybelline, a combination of Maybel and Vaseline. In 1917 the company produced Maybelline Cake Mascara, "the first modern eye cosmetic for everyday use" and Ultra Lash in the 1960s, which was the first mass-market automatic mascara. Well done Maybelline....
Just thought you would like to know......so next time you use your wands...thank Mr. Williams and his sister Maybel (pretty name non?).....Mulain is off to head off to the beauty stores in Mumbai to see what's out there to try....will see what the latest mascara offers...vibrating, mobile, wonderful wands? How we've evolved...wunderbar...
