SFX suppliers in Mumbai

SFX make-up by MU Natasha

Bonjour mes petits pois .....today we had our character assessment class at the fat mu academy. Love this session as love watching all the students putting into practice all that they have learnt in character class. Lots of details from broken veins, dirty teeth and nails, broken down skin, sore eyes, drinking eyes, moustaches, beards, black eyes, tired eyes blah blah blah. Imagine how much make-up you need to achieve these looks and effects? And this is just the intro class...phew! Yes SFX is a huge area and we rely on our suppliers here and abroad to make sure we have the right products and tools we need. So guys and dolls....Mulain has compiled a few companies who can provide the necessary materials...

Pirates of the Caribbean - at the fat mu academy

Mulain just loo-ves Captain Jack Sparrow...a.k.a Johnny Depp....

In character class MU Sara dressed up as Captain Jack....

MU-ette Soma...getting into the pirate spirit...

Even MU Virginia did n't escape...o'ah me hearties...

Another pirate....

A pirate in the making....yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!

Mulain loved seeing all the students working with their character looks - facial today and creating theatrical pirate characters. We all pretended to be pirates in Captain Jack Sparrow's world...great fun and how into the characters everyone felt, amazing the power of make-up. We started off creating the look with a simple colour Kryolan grease palette and setting it with Ben Nye's Neutral set powder.....we broke down the skin, put in stubble, darkened the undereyes, had Jack Sparrow eyes, and created sunburn...all with the right brushes and tools and sponges but essentially just working with one palette. We then recreated the same look but imagined it for cinema and the big screen. So we swapped grease palettes for Reel / Illustrator palettes and more sophisticated products...subtle layering of make-up suited for film and not theatre....very important to know and feel the difference.

Don't have a grease palette? GET ONE.....essential for your kit for any emergency situation.. Kryolan is great! ......Don't have a Reel palette either? Save up for one...and then GET ONE.....not available in India :(...know someone travelling put the word out there, most pro make-up stores sell them...in the UK try MAP / SCREENFACE...

Can't wait til next class.....cuts and bruises here we come...

Sexy Bronzed Bodies

A little tip for Mulain on a Monday morning....an artist can always carry baby oil in his / her kit ...useful on shoots or events or bridals...cheap quick way of removing make-up in an emergency and also great to add sexy sheen or dripping sweat onto the body...whatever your brief is...baby oil is there for you. In Bronzing / Tanning class today we got a small bowl, foundation brush, baby oil and bronzing powder and mixed it together and then painted it each others arms to get a feel for the look. Decide your ratio of product to oil...and then paint away. You can try gold powder, silver powder...remember you are the artiste...what look are you going for? Lovely effect...beware of clothes / costumes ....be sensible as oil is oil! It can get messy...so just like glitter ...BE CAREFUL while working.

Starting character week tomorrow...Mulain's favourite week!

Caio ...Mulain...

P.S.....Just how hot is Mu-mbai yaar?

Fake it..... don't Bake it!

Summer is here and we all want lovely glowing sun kissed skins.... especially triggered off lately by the British Royal wedding.
Bride Kate Middleton and sister Pippa Middleton both had lovely glowing skins and it seems girls everywhere are going gaga and trying to ape their look.... the British press have labelled it as 'The Middleton effect'..... and so it's no surprise fake tan sales have shot up lately.

So if that's something you're after... inspite of living in India with this glorious sunshine opt for the safer option of faking it... this way you can still look good now and in years to come.

Good choices to opt for are:

- Lancome's flash bronzer Leg gel

- Jemma Kidd's show stopper body glow

- Jergen's natural glow

- Ben Nye bronzing tint

- Revlon skin lights

All of the above will give you light natural looking colour... some with sheen...

For the face tinted moisturisers and bronzing powders can also be used... Some of the best ones available here are at MAC, Guerlain and Lancome....

So start fakin' it girls!!!

For the love of theatre!

Mulain would love you to go and catch fringe play Chaos Theory if you have n't already seen it...MU's Natasha and Virginia and Sara (and fat mu friend Natasha Charak) designed the hair and make-up and clothes back in 2008 and are delighted to see this show running time and time again...witty dialogues, great performances and of course watch how we styled the actors over 4 decades without them leaving the stage!! We go from 2000s to the 1960s to the 1980s then to the 1970s...great fun and so challenging and rewarding. So for any artists out there, explore the world of theatre and see what creative challenges lie ahead...I guarantee you'll expand your mind and skillset tenfold. Money's not great but 'for the love of theatre' do it!! Money is not everything...

Jessie J's Nobody's Perfect Make-up!

Mulain is loo-ving the lips!

Gothic glam!

Soft, edgy glam...

Whacky glam!

"Circus Glam"....think Mulain just coined a phrase...

Ok..while watching VH1 last week Mulain picked up on Jessie J's 'Nobody's Perfect' Music Video ....it was so Gaga-esque / Christina-esque.....Jessie was changing hair and make-up so fast and throwing us edgy, dark, whacky looks every 10 secs it seems...apparently this Brit singer will not rest until she is as BIG as Lady Gaga....good luck to you...creatively you're certainly following in her footsteps....great voice, catchy tunes...but methinks there is only one Gaga! Great to see for Monday morning inspiration....head to YouTube to see her MV...it's fast and furious and smacks us so many different colour combos on lips, eyes, nails...a feast for the eyes.

It's bridal class this morning...lots of Wedding Belles heading for class. Have a great day in the Mumbai heat....rains coming soon I feel.

Statement lips

Whatever the occasion... from a red carpet event at the Cannes film festival to the Met ball in New york or any other event..... it seems the ladies are favouring statement lips .

Statement lips worn in red, coral, orange, fushia or whatever you may fancy is a bold and sexy statement and sometimes its all you need to perk up an outfit.

Check out MAC, Chanel, Estee Lauder and YSL for some lovely bold colours in matt, creamy or glossy textures to sport the look of these lovely ladies....

Back to basics

The wonders of almond oil were only recently discovered by MU Natasha ..... coloured dehydrated hair not a good look... no amount of expensive shampoos and conditioning treatments seemed to do the trick to last long enough and bring back lustrous soft glossy hair... and so to the rescue came pure almond oil highly recommended by a model on a recent shoot..... lightweight and easier to wash off than coconut oil.... a little goes a long way.... massage onto the scalp and add the left over amount from your palms onto your hair.... leave overnight and shampoo in the morning ..... not a lot of shampoo needed so it does not dry out the hair.... au contraire.... you'll be sporting shiny glossy locks you did'nt think possible in such a short span of time!... ask your chemist for pure almond oil..... try it .. it really works!

Student make-up of the week!

Mulain just loo-ved MU-ette Clover's clown face she created in class this week at the fat mu academy....it showed wit, creativity, technical ability and all done in her allocated time frame she was given...well done Clover. MU Virginia has been super happy with all the MU-ettes this week...all showing designing skills ontop of tech side...and all team players which is the best important part. Good luck with your black and white shoots my darlings...Mulain knows you can MU it!

Products used: Ben Nye's Clown White / Kryolan Grease palette (coloured Supra if you go to the Kryolan store to get one)....plus translucent powder to set it...Ben Nye or Kryolan.

Strike a pose!

Strike a pose!

Mulain spotted MU Virginia sporting a fab matt, tomato red, traffic spotting nail colour by one of our fave brands 'Inglot'. Easy to apply in one coat, you get an even, consistent finish and dries almost immediately....great for quick fix nail on shoots or even for nights/days out. Go to the Inglot store in Andheri to check it out and also see all the other rainbow assortment of colours.

Great fun!

Beauty and Salon Magazine May 2011

Mulain was checking out MU Virginia's article in Beauty and Salon Magazine May 2011....tips on Summer skin...which I think you'll agree we all need. How hot is it man? Mon dieu!...I do agree with her too when she writes drink water like it's going out of fashion....keep you and your skin hydrated....keep it all simple...less is more and fresh and clean. Explore suncremes, tinted moisturizers with SPFs...trying mixing your foundation with a moisturizer (creating your own skin tint). Keep your powder compact in your handbag at all times...that t-zone needs regular attention...lips should be lip-balmed or comfortably glossed. Mulain's top tip is head to New Beauty Centre at Khar to invest in Neutrogena's spray-on 30sfp sunprotecter...no mess and so easy to apply. Have fun in the sun but cover up, wear a hat....whatever works for you and your skin...everyone is different.

Caio for now...Mulain x

P20 Sunfilter

Ok it's Summer and it's SOOOOO x 1000000 hot ya! We are all out and about in the heat and obviously protecting our skins!? (Has Mulain taught you nothing?)....so am sure you are all out there buying suncreams / gels / sprays galore. Me being thoughtful as ever came across another option for you guys and gals....P20 sunfilter! Been around for years and some swear by it.....beauty is application is one time....30 mins before you hit the rays...then it's on all day....water resistent and you don't burn! (as long as your application is consistent all will be ok)...MU Virginia heard about this on a recent film project.....we are so used to reapplying creams so a one-off option could just make life easier non?

Want to know more ...check out the site www.p20.co.uk .......no harm trying...generally reviews are great...gradual tanning and no burning, no creamy, messy applications throughout the day? Definitely worth a try says Mulain.

Make-up from the streets!

Shop til you drop . . . .

but not from the streets!

Ok..little tip from Mulain today....don't buy make-up from the streets!!! As a pro make-up artist you CANNOT buy MAC or Bobbi Brown or any other brand from an unknown source. We know that you think you're getting a bargain and saving your money...but bottom line is you don't know where the make-up has come from and you don't know what's in it! Imagine putting it on a client's face or body and an allergy happens or skin erupts...you don't look very professional and you may be harming that person. So really think about the responsibility of being an artist. Always buy the real McCoy that way you protect yourself, if there are any issues with a brand or product you can always take the product back!

So be sensible and invest your cash wisely! Here endeth the lesson.....
