Statement lips with another leading lady....well done Ms. Bullock...
"Yes it's Ladies night and the feeling's right, oh yes it's ladies night...oh what a night!"...thank you Mr.Kool and the Gang for giving us such great lyrics.....well it's certainly been a ladies day....March 8th...International Women's Day.....the fat mu team spent the day with girls from the Sharanam Centre for Girls in Bombay www.sharanamcentre.org making them up for their dance performances at their celebrations today....great day out and thanks to all our freelancers and team who supported us. Bravo! And Bravo to Katherine Bigelow who won Best Director at the Oscars yesterday....truly a ladies day and night.
Mulain carefully scrutinized the red carpet and really found nearly everyone went for safe, generic, classic glamour...lots of long gowns....strapless chic...bits of Avatar Blue around.....(are we all getting a bit dull?)....a few statement mouths, thank you Sandra Bullock....and arty hair, thank you Patricia Fields. 80s teen star Molly Ringwald looked tres cool and different doing her own thing and young Carey Mulligan holding the torch for those with short hair amongst us....everyone else....sort of blended into the same...maybe it's just me but where was Cher in a fantastic cabaret number, where was Bjork dressed as a swan, Diane Keaton dressed in a tux? Imagination, individual flair? .....Would love to know what you all think my darlings....?

Get Candied!

Candies.. Popsicles.. Cakes.. are not only a feast for the taste buds but also a feast for the eyes... we have all been known to 'Oooooh' when we see beautiful displays of cakes or mouth watering colourful popsicles on a hot summers day... all lovely to look at .. so why not take inspiration from these beautiful looking 'foods' (would n't quite call it that... but...) that so perfectly complement this season... ?
Lovely Lollies...... great shapes and colour combinations .... get inspired and play around with 2 or more colours on your eyes or perhaps different colours on eyes and lips... look for complementing or contrasting combinations... whatever your style...

Pretty Popsicles.... pure solid colour. Simple and beautiful. Pick any one as a solid matt colour over the eye or go for the lips with a matt red mouth or a juicy orange gloss.... take your pick and make it a statement with lovely clean skin and one solid block of colour doing all the talking...

Flirty Fruitgums..... we're talking opaque colour with gloss... deep wines.. plums and reds on the mouth... lacquered lips.... very sexy!... Chanel do a beautiful variety in their 'Rouge Allure Laque' Collection...

Cute cupcakes..... soft pastel colours... very pretty on anyone wearing them... very 'in' now... Maybelline has lovely pastels in it eyes and cheeks 'mousse' collection.... great colours on nails too!

Hope this has inspired you to start using colour my darlings... colour is fun... dont let it intimidate you... it's time to discover your alter ego!

Gaga about the Lady!

Wow! is all we can say when we look at her... always awaiting her next appearance to see what look she's sporting... so inspirational... makes you think who is the brain behind Lady Gaga?

Lady Gaga in a very short time has become a huge brand which is herself...(himself?)... top points to her for being a top sport and willing to carry out all these fantabulous looks!... it's what I would say the future 'looks' like... and top points to her stylist! Complete out of the box thinking...

She has become so big that the Estee Lauder company is apparently cashing in (literally) on her fame... Gaga along with Cyndi Lauper is the spokesperson for Viva Glam by MAC and apparently due to her fame the sales of the Viva Glam product have gone beyond ... are you ready..... $1.1million in the FIRST month!! WOW!
Apparently it has also been said that 3-4 percent of Estee Lauder's growth in 2010 could come from their association with Madame Gaga!... that percentage my dears may seem small... but when you talk in billions or trillions even ... especially for a company like Estee Lauder it works out to a HUGE ( if I could write this bigger I would...) amount of cash!! Wow!!...I can't stop saying that.... Wow!... talk about fame... popularity and having an influence over the masses.... and its easy to see why... and so lets pay tribute to the lady, get inspired and and go gaga over her style!

.... WOW!!... (... again!)

The eyes have it all......

So why do I think that everyone is looking to India for inspiration?.... this is all guess work of course......... but it seems obvious..... first with the Spring colour collection... I think Holi.... then the film Avatar... obviously derived from the Sanskrit term 'Avatara'.. which means descent and refers to a descent of a deity..... a deity in Hindu mythology was / is always portrayed as blue.... see the connection... mmm... I think so.... read more about what it means at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avatar... and then now straight of the Milan catwalks again.. its come to light that for Autumn / Winter 2010 statement eyes are in too! ... and by statement they mean... liquid liner and kohl!....mmmm.... 2 things that are synonymous with Indian women!... infact we at fat mu HQ often say that Indian women are born with kohl.... so what do you think... West looking East?? I'd say so.... though I have to say I'm not sure I like this trend.... it's hard enough getting Indian women to break away from this and now it'll be even harder!.... so... Mulain has an idea!! If liner and kohl are here to stay then why not try to do something different as much as possible non?
Here are a few suggestions... try Retro eyelines... go playful and exaggerated a la Amy Winehouse .... or instead of a flick try a blunt geometric outer edge? Maybe don't wear liner all the way through the eye (unless your eyes are wide set) start at the middle going out or just the outer corner... or extend the line into your crease.... go really thin or really thick even .. or just draw a shape and break the straight line we are all so used to....or then just go classic like Cleopatra where it all started... why not eh? I think you'd be surprised at how good it can look..... just play and be experimental I say.... below are some images to help you break the conventional mode, have fun and get creative!

Products to help you achieve this look are:
Lakme- Liquid liner and pen
MAC- fluid line
Bobbi Brown- gel eyeliner
Benefit- duo cake liner
If using a brush what I find really works other than the thin ones meant for lining eyes are in fact a lip brush - yup you read that right.... lip brushes are great for eyelining and give good control and flicks! try it!

.... as for the kohl... there's only so much you can do... please prove me wrong!... instead of just applying it conventionally again try to go for a really smudgy sultry all around the eye look..... a bit more rocker.... or the morning after look which never fails to impress...
Good Kohl pencils/ pots/ tubes are available at:
Shahnaz Hussain
Lakme
Lancome
Estee Lauder
Guerlain

.... or for the best and most budget friendly one thats really good is 'Surma' original Pakistani kohl... try get your hands on one... either from Mohd. Ali road in Mumbai or from Pakistan?!
or then do what grandma Mulain does... heat a stainless steel spoon over an open flame/ candle and scrape the black that this makes and collect in a leetle pot and apply with your fingers... sound strange? I know .. it does... but it works... some people even burn cashews... but nevermind that for now.....

Remember you DON'T have to apply eyeliner and kohl together.... one CAN work without the other.... Have fun experimenting!!!... and remember to tell Mulain how it all goes......

All about Brows!

So designers at Milan fashion week have decided to 'add' to their 'nineties minimalism' look...
So Brows a la Brooke Shields are back in a big way and 'outdoorsy peachy skin' is in!...thank god a little more oomph... it was all starting to look a bit bleak!

Dark, bold brows are beautiful on women (and men...mmmm) and really frame their face well and actually bring it to life... so for the few of us who are not fortunate enough to be born with them here are a few tips on how to cheat them...
Eyebrow pencils - Available at most beauty counters... but I have to say we MUs are not big on them.. they never tend to look natural and always look drawn in... how can that ever be attractive?.... although saying that I have seen a lot of women in the Middle East sporting that look - different ideal of beauty eh?... interesting that... topic for another day!.... OK so back to eyebrow pencils.... stay light with your touch and get accustomed to using light feathery strokes to achieve the most natural look.....
Eyeshadows - A much preferred option... opt for matt shadows and a colour close to your natural hair colour.. this coupled with a good brow brush are all you need to help you achieve those lovely dark natural looking 'I was born with these brows' look... again light feathery strokes are key and you can keep them tres natural one day or give them a nice classic shape the other.. whatever takes your fancy....
products that help achieve this easily are :

Make Up Factory- Have a great affordable 2- in- 1 'eyebrow powder set' with brushes and stencils - available at new beauty center - no.2 is great on indian skins..

Benefit- 'Brow Zings'- brow shaping kit - comes with 2 shadows/ brush and tweezers
Benefit- 'Brows- a- go-go' comes with 3 colours of shadow for filling in brow / brush/ tweezer AND an eyebrow pencil AND a highlighter for lifting the brow and opening up the eye area- truly an all in one product for brows... we love Benefit!

Other than these you can just pop in to MAC or Bobbi Brown and pick up a shadow with the help of an artist... and don't worry too much about the cost as the product will last you a long, long time...

If you're the type who can't be bothered doing this everyday and want a slightly more permanent option try brow and lash dyeing... no not with your hair dye... the outcome would not be pleasant so please don't attempt this at home... there are special dyes for eyebrow and lashes which stay on for about 3-4 weeks and give you a lovely, natural oomph without looking unnatural... I personally love it! You can have them done here at our fat mu HQ with our makeover specialist Sara or at Venu's skin clinic.... want more details ? Ask Mulain!

... and finally once you've got your brows looking the way you want.. keep them in place by applying a good brow gel, MAC and Ben Nye do great ones that don't flake on you... then finish off by popping the look with a highlighter -'Highbeam' by Benefit (again....!) is just gorgeous.. or 'High Brow' a highlighter pencil.. yes again by Benefit is a good one too. Apply just beneath the arch of the brow on the brow bone .. et voila! Be-eautiful!

Hope this helps.... should you have any more questions Mulain is here to help!
