Do you dare to wear?

Mulain had a lovely day yesterday with a beauty journalist who came to have a make-up lesson with MU Virginia. What fun we had, going through her make-up kit and dividing it into two sections for her.. 1) neutral, day products and 2) party / night / glamour ones. Our guest was super comfortable with doing her face for an everyday look...the generic/neutral glamour....she came to us because she had in her kit a host of colours / textures that she did n't know what to do with. One colour we found was an acid/lime green eye-shadow from MAC. Looks completely scary in the box and most people don't know what to do with bright, fantastic colours....do not fear....fat mu are here!
Firstly we had to get the colour out and get a feel of it. So we had a play on her hand, mixed it with other colours and then eventually decided to have a play on the lids. We went for a bold, solid shape on the eye, supported by a dramatic black eye-line to set it off. It looked lovely and unusual and wonderfully 'non-frightening'.
So Mulain's advice today is not to get scared of colour and textures - get out your kits / make-up bags, find the bright colours, be it lipstick, blusher or shadows and start to have a play. Remember make-up is fun and very theraputic my darlings.....so dare to wear!

YSL limited edition creme de blush.......3 fabulous colours.....

Powdery Pink

Velvety Peach

Silky Praline

Mulain spotted these little gems in Shoppers Stop, Linking Road, Bandra...Mumbai....yes deep in the heart of 'Bollywoodland' think we 've found the perfect blush.......3 great shades....a light creme applied to the cheeks (a little goes a long way)...and it sets as a powder, meaning that in the heat it has more staying power on the face. This is excellent news my darlings for those of you who find their rouge does not stay put. This product is not cheap, and is a limited edition....but I assure you it's worth every rupee, penny etc...it will last a long time and give the perfect pop of colour on the cheeks.

Grammy Glam!

Rihanna Rocks!

Grammy girls together....uber glam non?

Lady Gaga in another league altogether....

Never one to go for understated chic na.....

Well hope you had a wonderful weekend my friends.....we have been so busy in wedding world, 'Disney-world', skin-care TVCs so catching up with the rest of the planet and checking out all the different looks at the 2010 Grammies....So many popstars / rockstars to look at...Mulain's head is all a-spin this morning. I have to say Rihanna (as per usual) looks amazing, she seems to set a new trend as soon as she steps out of her door non? Great style, hair and what lashes.....short hair, great skin and big lashes is definitely a look for this year.....big and bold my darlings. And like last year, Lady Gaga did not disappoint....slightly fewer costume changes this year....but great fun and so different....sort of a Cyndi Lauper / David Bowie tribute I feel. Don't think she's a shy girl somehow.....(or boy? not sure that issue was ever cleared up....never mind her talent speaks for her/himself). Dying to see the Elton John duet she did...mu-st be quite spectacular...
MU Natasha was holed up in studios and doing another skin ad....look out for the up-and-coming Genelia Garnier TVC she did....should be running soon.....will get her to write a leetle skin lesson for you all this week....as we know my darlings...your make-up look starts with skin.....so you mu-st know all there is to know....
MU Virginia did her first Irani Bride....and what fun! This bride is a London gal by birth and wonderfully eccentric and wanted a traditional Bridal look with a twist. Make-up was subtle, with lovely fresh, glowing skin and a slightly 60s smoke look on the eyes....we were all set with the nail polish being a dark, vampish red when the bride changed her mind last minute and said she wanted pink! So on we popped a new brand called Wet 'n' Wild, a crazy eye-catching pink called 'Pink Pearl'...http://www.wnwbeauty.co.uk/nails/wildshine.html....it just popped the look and added a bit of funkiness....pinky lips completed her look and she looked just fabulous.....a happy, glowing bride!
Mulain is off to the Disney shoot now to check all the MUs are doing ok.....

Who cares I say....so creative and different...Mulain and girls are so inspired......We have super creative shoots coming up too....so excited....lots of work but great fun and we are always trying to push the boundaries of our art....
Off to a Pune/Parsi wedding with Virginia MU this weekend....Natasha MU is tied up with Genelia doing a skin TVC...she won't see the light of day for a while (tinted moisturizer my darling) and the fat mu team are on a patchwork shoot for Zokkomon!

3 lipsticks in one day!

Morning time lips....Revlon's Nude Attitude

Lunchtime statement lips in Revlon's Strawberry Suede

Stunning dinner mouth in Revlon's Wine Not.....Wow factor galore!

Ok...so Mulain was meant to run around the stores today checking what's 'out there' in the make-up world. Confession....I got stuck at the Revlon counter testing all their new Matt lipsticks for a long time....so many lovely shades to try out.....just could n't decide which one to get so got 3! The great thing about Revlon is it does n't break the bank....so I did n't feel too bad treating myself here. Decided on a neutral shade 'Nude Attitude' to start the day....then decided on a fabulous red 'Strawberry Suede' to add glamour to a lunch-do or midday meeting.....and fell in love with a vampy dark colour called 'Wine Not' for a deadly night, party, dinner look. How easy to put on and change my look! Instant pick-me-up and creatively fun. With each shade it brings out a new avatar of me.....understated chic....confident class....devastating glamour....how clever, thank you Revlon.
Off to meet the girls, with my wonderul new red mouth....shooting, shooting and more shooting...my the MUs are busy....roll on 2010!

It's starring Darsheel Safary and is the story of a little's boys adventure into the wonderland of being a super-hero.....great fun!

No time today to check out the make-up counters...tomorrow my friends. Looking for a new lipstick colour me-thinks.....and a blusher that does n't melt away in the heat and a wild new nail colour...will keep you posted.

Culture Vulture

Mulain has just returned from the Pink City, yes that's Jaipur my friends, and the Literary Festival. What a weekend...my god....completely gets you inspired, mentally refreshed and tuned in to the world around us.....great location, fantastic speakers, lovely crowd....Wunderbar. Saw Roddy Doyle, Niall Ferguson, Louis De Bernieres, Tina Brown, Stephen Freyers and many more......Mulain ran into a friend who was surprized that I was there...meaning....'you! a make-up artist...at a literary do'?.....'ow narrow-minded eh? I 'ave a brain like everyone else, I write a blog everyday, I read whenever I can.....how silly....think people really think we are all fluffy and talk only about 'colours' and 'lipsticks' and 'gloss'.....shame on them all....and that goes for us too my darlings....we must really not judge people....we are always proved wrong....
Mulain and the team are back to the city with a bump and getting ready for more shoots and weddings.....who said the wedding season is over? Not at all....it's always wedding season my darlings....
Ok....tomorrow will be checking out what's in the stores make-up wise and see if I can spot any goodies for us all..

Brush 217!

A brush us artistes could n't be without...MAC brush No. 217!!! Mwah..mwah...mwah...we at fat mu hq love you! MAC's website describes this brush in the following way...."For shading or blending of colour or creamy products. This brush has fine, densely packed fibers that are arranged in an oval shape. M·A·C professional brushes are hand-sculpted and assembled using the finest quality materials. They feature wood handles and nickel-plated brass ferrules..". This brush is oh-so-much-more...a blending dream and wash paradise for artists, it takes away any edges, gives you the subtlety and understatedness you sometimes need for your work plus is super easy to handle and delicate on the eye-lids.....if you go onto YouTube or Google and type in the No.217 you can read the reviews yourselves and see the brush tutorials devoted to this little number. Just marvellous....an artist is nothing without tools....they are an extension of us my darlings....treat them well and they will be with you for life! So we recommend this little treasure for sure...just watch how it transforms your work.

Rehydrate your skin!

Having lovely, comfortable skin is a mu-st for all of us....professionals or non-professionals.....it's just an everyday essential I feel. We feel so good if our skin is having a good day! So as always, Mulain is here to tell you about a top product which will make your life easier and all the more wonderful. I discoverd Body Moisture Spray by Sanctuary quite by accident a few years ago....picked up the bottle (good packaging), read the back, liked the sound of it and thought it quite affordable. I have never looked back personally or professionally, and have used it on many a shoot! It has a fragrant, feather light oil which instantly nourishes and conditions thirsty skin, all with a few spritzs. Moisturising Sweet Almond Oil, smoothing Jojoba and antioxidant Vitamin E are quickly absorbed to leave skin hydrated, soft and glowing with a healthy sheen, just fabulous in these drying Winter months...plus the smell is just divine and intoxicating to the senses....

Here is the science / tech bit........Jojoba A is a light, natural emollient. It is said to mimic the action of sebum, which is the skins own lubricant. It helps to moisturise the skin and therefore promotes a radiant complexion. Sweet Almond Oil has a fine texture, is easily absorbed and helps to leave the skin soft and satiny smooth. Vitamin E is an antioxidant and is a fat soluble Vitamin that maintains cell membranes. It traps and neutralises free radicals created by the environment and offers good protection for the skin.

For home use it's easy to use....and super fast for people on-the-go...like us my friends! Especially lovely after a hot shower when skin needs that instant hydration. It just glides on...just spray lightly onto clean skin and smooth in gently for a speedy moisture boost.

On shoots it's great for make-up artists who want a light sheen on the body and not a heavily oiled look. Plus you can carry it in your set-bag on standby should you ever need it, the top makes it leak proof...always a must with any oils...otherwise it's a big mess.

It is not too pricey either 500 Rs.....but...you can't get it in India....yet! Check out the Sanctuary website...http://www.thesanctuary.co.uk/our-story.htm.....and see what other yummy stuff they have too.....it's a Spa paradise, really.. find someone who travels and give them a shopping list!

Right off to the office.....lots to do....re-shoots for our soon to be released movie of 2010....plus new looks to design....another exciting day in MU town!

Golden Globe Beauty!

Mulain thought Madesmoiselle Drew Barrymore looked so loo-verly and feminine and polished and sophisticated and dazzling (I could go on) on the night of The Golden Globes...with so many other leading ladies also looking quite splendid also, tricky to pick out a favourite. What Mulain liked from this look is it's understated glamour......she played down the colours and went for a nude / light / natural colour palette...and it worked! Beautiful skin, lovely soft eyes and a slight colour on the cheeks and lips to lift the look slightly. Bravo Drew....Mulain is quite a fan. Seems that most of the leading ladies chose nude nails as a common trend......nothing to outshine the Golden Gong it seems....!
Mulain says try Lakme's Classic nail polish in Nude D18, Sheer Nude Tropical Island Collection in 029 or if you want to splash out try Chanel's Inattendu 503, for a classic nude.
Caio for now, Mulain x

Colour theory.....

Mulain and the MUs were chatting today, as we are fine-tuning our professional course...and we all agreed just how important 'colour theory' is with regards to our work. All make-up artists must understand the world of colour to really become the best artist they can be. So ask yourselves....do you know what the Primary Colours are....? What is a tint? ....What is a hue? What are warm or cool colours....if you cannot answer any of the above then you must called Mulain right now to book up on our course!...If you know a leetle bit ....still not good enough....you must know all of it! It will only help you in your work my friends from films to the beauty counter. Buy a little pad and water-colour set and start mixing colours and seeing what happpens....experiment and the world of colour will start to appear before your very eyes.....

Education and knowledge are so important my darlings.....as are practice and practice and more practice...and even more.....

Mulain is off for to finish his painting he is doing....will post when done....my masterpiece...'Dada in Dadar'......don't know what Dada-ism is?....shame on you artists....google it!

Mwah for now...M x

The power of green!

Mulain has just spent a glorious weekend in the countryside of Maharashtra.....surrounded by trees, butterflies, lizards, flora....so soothing for the soul my friends and what clean air! Oh la la...... And after watching Avatar 3D and knowing how important it is having 'green' in your life....it is not just nice my darlings...it is essential to our well-being. So what if you can't get out of the city to feel nature and breathe properly...get some plants in your flat! Learn to nurture and appreciate them. Watch Discovery Channel, National Geographic...tap in whenever you can....look after the planet and it will look after you...mu-tual respect is needed my friends. Check out the Greenpeace website to see how you can help your environment and see http://www.greenpeople.co.uk/ to observe how some cosmetic companies keep it all safe and green.
We are getting more and more enquiries at fat mu HQ about mineral make-up and going natural...so keep you eyes and ears peeled my friends and go as natural as you can....a rose water spritz from good old Fabb India is a good way to start.
A much refreshed Mulain x

Make-up Artist Magazine

Make-up Artist Magazine Jan/Feb 2010..

My MUs featured in Make-up Artist Magazine in 2009.....ah...how time flies my friends....

How to keep up with the make-up times?....obviously YouTube tutorials help but Mulain also recommends getting / viewing Make-up Artist Magazine.....it's full of industry news from around the world. From fashion make-up, to tools, latest products, awards, films, techniques, tips, interviews, SFX, Q&As...it will keep you in the loop (par example find out what Rick Baker and Pat Mcgrath say) and will keep adding to your knowledge....and what is knowledge my friends?....that's right....power! You have to know what is happening 'out there' on planet make-up...no excuses.....there is not only one brand out there, one brush, one sponge...there is a whole kaleidoscope of information waiting for you to dip into.....have a look at http://www.makeupmag.com/ or visit the Kryolan Store, Beauty Palace in Oshiwara to pick up your own copy. Cannot recommend the magazine enough.
If you head to the store...do check out all the latest Kryolan stuff too...fantastic way to shop for make-up...you can try products and the staff are very well-trained. A well managed, well displayed retail experience....well done Kryolan Mumbai!
Off for a bridal trial my darlings...off I fly...

Kites!

Mulain says...let's go fly a kite...up to the highest height, let's go fly a kite and send it soaring...tra la la.....What a wonderful day it is today in India...it's the kite festival when kids and anyone who loo-ves colours and fun is out flying their kites.....what an inspiring sight....India is the land of colour yes, but today it looks something else...the sky is filled with rainbow delights. Flashes of pink, blue, yellow.....glimpses of green, purple, red....Mulain and the team just love it. As an artist you will love it for the colours....imprint those on your creative mind and put them on your next face!
Can't fly a kite today?.....no worry....pop on Mary Poppins and watch them in action at the end or watch the poignant, sorrowful Kite Runner......
Mulain is off to the Kryolan store now....must dash....
