Great book to have in your make-up library

A pretty lady from 1590s...start looking at painting of women, it's our only visual record of them before le camera my darlings...

Mulain thinks that everyone in the world should know about the history of make-up. Of course a make-up artist should know their subject...make-up did n't just happen in the 21st century...it has evolved over thousands of years...Mulain is going to keep throwing useful and interesting make-up and hair info at you my friends, so brace yourselves. An essential and fantastic book is Richard Corson's 'Fashions in Make-up from Ancient to Modern Times'....640 pages jammed with info and styles and concontions and cute little tit-bits. What is fascinating is how women (and men) have always wanted to look good...even 4000 years ago! And amazing at what lengths people went to, to achieve this...even death sometimes (don't think anything has changed really). And as always there has been this battle to look fair and white!

Get this.....Corson tells us that women in Elizabethan days (16th century England) were told that if they did n't want to wear white paint (packed full of poisonous lead) to make themselves 'fair and lovely' or to cover rough skin that they should wash in their own urine or urine mixed with Rose-water...eeeuuuugghhhh. Makes the mind boggle does n't it? Have you heard any interesting and quirky make-up stories from the past? Mulain would LOVE to know....:). So many different theories and ideas at that particular time but Mulain wonders we may laugh but actually what does anyone know about Botox? Or about Parabens in make-up these days? The world of make-up is much safer and it's been tested and tested etc but still do we really know the ingredients in everything or what they do to us. Maybe we choose not to?

"Young and tan and tall and lovely....

...the girl from Ipanema goes walkin'..."....one of Mulain's favourite songs of all time. Today it's MU Natasha's birthday and MU Virginia when she first met Nat nicknamed her TGFI after this song....what a compliment eh? So to celebrate this song and Nat's birthday...MU Sara has created a new make-up look inspired from it. Originally a 60s sound and feel...she has recreated a look in the fat mu academy on MU-ette Jaspreet. It's a 2011 80s inspired Girl from Ipanema. For those of you who don't know the song, don't know where Ipanema is????....LOOK IT UP!! :) ...there you go Mulain has set you homework. So will be posting up the snaps and make-up breakdown on our fb page, keep your eyes peeled for it.

Strike a pose!!!

Vogue, Vogue, Vogue!! One of Mulain's favourite magazines in the whole wide world (especially Vogue Italy!) .....anyway...am digressing....am happy to see MU Sunita's name in print for the fashion feature in this month's Indian Vogue. Make-up artist from UK Emma Osbourn was in-charge of making up an army of women for the 'Family Matters' feature and our loo-verly MU Sunita went in to help her. Great make-ups girls, good on ya!

It's Friday my friends....c'est Le Weekend....hope whatever you're doing it's gonna rock and roll...or maybe you're destressing and relaxing....it's your scene. Mulain is having a theatrical weekend, doing rehearsal for The King and I tomorrow and then backstage with the hilarious Cyrus Broacha for 1 out of 6! What busy little bees the MUs are....

Quick little product MU-tip straight from the cow's mouth? Want a monsoon MUU'D lifter? Pick up a little lip tint by Lakme...it's super cute!!! It put a smile on my lips as soon as MU Sara showed it to me...the heart shaped pot is just lovely and the colours girly and poppy! The new tints come in 4 shades, and the hardest part is picking whether you are a FLIRT, CHARMER, HOTTIE OR SIREN. I am of course all 4 so picked them up! And why not at approx Rs.200 a pot it's a bargain! Tints with a glossy texture, perfect for a pretty pout my darlings. GO GET!

....her lips sweet surprise, her hands are never cold, she's got Bette Davis eyes...."...tra la la....Today we are having fun in the fat mu academy and getting inspired by MU-sic and lyrics....MU Virginia is creating a retro design inspired by 80s pop song "Bette Davis Eyes" and MU Sara is working on her take on "The Girl from Ipanema"...."Tall and tan and young and lovely..."....such fun and great to use one's imagination with make-up. Mulain wants to do Kesha's "Tik Tok"...."Wake up in the morning feelin' like P Diddy..."...now that would be a challenge! :).

MU-tip for Monday morning...MUUU!

Get a few current lipshades....

and a couple of pots of pigments....

and share 'em out! Make-up is not cheap my darlings and to all budding artists out there ...a little MU-tip.....get together with a few friends who are artists and choose a few lipsticks that are current shades, then divide them up in your lip palettes (try a simple empty pill box and start filling up with exciting shades - remember to label them though)...that way you stay up-to-date without breaking the bank. Same with pigments...we all know pigments can take your make-ups to another level...am I right or am I right my darlings umm?...So again pick a few, buy between you, share them between you and that way you've got a good variety in your kit for all occasions...great for pros or die-hard make-up fans. You stay up with trends and don't miss out on new stuff coming in. Always, always buy from the correct supplier and NEVER the streets...

Explaining the 15 min DIY face-lift....

Mulain thoroughly enjoyed this Saturday's workshop at the fat mu academy...'Face Values'...great fun and so informative. The MUs invited Bharti M who lives in Pune and runs a skincare company called Waterline to give a talk and demo. As all make-up artists know...skincare and prep is essential to our work and also as women it's lovely to look after your skin and feel and look good and healthy. Bharti has so much knowledge to share and is passionate about her philosophy and skincare range. Mulain bought a day cream and night cream plus the best balm in the world as far as I'm concerned...it's truly, truly good! Mulain is SO proud of all Batch 6 MU-ettes who are passing out today....Woo hoo!...excited for all of you going out into the big bad world. Don't worry there is always fat mu world to fall back on in case you get wobbly feet, have a bad day blah blah blah...but essentially you are on your own, standing tall and proud ....little budding artists. So go forward make us all proud.

Full on beards in action...

How Mulain laughed when he saw the MU-ettes in their facial hair class. Oh how MU-ch fun character week is! It's a Harry Potter theme...so we have been learning to master the art of facial hair application. Today we did battle scenes...imagining all characters escaping a battle of Voldermort's army and dementors...so scratches, bruises, black eyes, blood, sweat, bad teeth, scars...all on show today. Tomorrow is their character assessment day and Batch 6's last day of their pro course...Mulain gets too sad saying goodbye...but it's not goodbye MU-ettes....it's MU-ving on to a different journey with you all. Super excited for all of you starting your professional lives from Monday.

Banned make-up ads!

How interesting my friends UK's ASA has banned 2 beauty ad campaigns from Lancome and Maybelline.....one Liberal Democrat MP claimed these celebrity endorsed products (thank you Julia and Christy) did n't match up to the reality of what they did. Mulain is happy about this....someone is out there trying to protect the consumers from the scary world of make-up empires who just want to sell, sell, sell - ethics are important my friends.
