The power of Make-up

Make-up has the ability to evoke another world... you could take a naked woman in a pair of shoes, do her make-up and everyone would instinctively know what decade she was from, whether its the twenties, thirties, sixties or seventies.... says Tom Ford, the man who has done everything from fashion to fragrances to direct a movie. We love you Mr. Ford for appreciating our art, and hope you gave the make-up designer on your film a well deserved title credit!

And now if you think he's done it all.. think again... fresh off the success of his film ' A Single Man' .. Monsieur Ford has launched his lipstick line. The collection features 12 shades with gorgeous colours like True Coral, Pure Pink, Moroccan Rouge and his signature Black Orchid.. to name a few... and it boasts a luxurious long lasting texture too......but you'd have to be a serial lipstick wearer or a serious Tom Ford fan to purchase these as they may leave a slight dent in your pocket with a price tag of GBP35 each!.... Ummm.... but since monsieur Ford is so good at what he does... am sure this won't fail to impress either and may be well worth a try... lets see....

Time to get Reel!

Mulain was told by the cameraman on a recent TV commercial that the 'stubble look' that the MUs created was so real that he wanted to know what we used. So we let him in on a little secret of ours..... Reel Palettes..... http://www.reelcreations.com/ ....... We at fat mu have a selection of their palettes but the one above is the most popular and versatile one available.....you can create bruises, black eyes, cuts, stubble, cover tattoos, scars etc.....quick easy palette to work with and lasts! To create the stubble look that was complimented....we had a black stipple sponge, some Isopropyl Alchohol and mixed the black, green and blue together to get the right effect and colour. Remember never just make stubble black in colour....this will look fake. It must look real, work slowly and carefully following the natural beardline of the artist...stippling carefully. If you go too heavy, don't panic my friends...just get a cotton bud, dab it with the alchohol and stipple over the part you want to correct. Make-up news live from the MUs...

Good morning.....Mulain is with MU Virginia at Mehboob studios, shooting a commercial for an airline company and is watching the MU army create some lovely, fun, modern retro make-up and hair designs.....we have a factory line of lashes, eye-lines, lipsticks, bases happening.....what fun...but hard work my darlings...it's not all glamour....a sneaky insider tip.......MAC's Blacktrack fluid liner is the hero of the shoot...an intense black liner, easy to apply, gives great definition and best of all lasts...ALL DAY!!! Thank you MAC! We also going with MAC's Morange lipstick, which everyone has fallen in loo-ve with......

Maybelline!

Mulain is always on the lookout for new good quality products in all price ranges... as cheap does not necessarily mean bad and sometimes high street brands are as good as their luxury cousins.

Recently Mulain discovered one such product shooting with MU Natasha and MU Sara on a Garnier cleanser commercial. Maybelline's define-a-lash, waterproof mascara in black. MU Sara introduced this leetle gem to MU Natasha, who was uber pleased with the results of this wonderful product. Great lashes and truly waterproof .. the proof was in the pudding as they say with all the water that was splashed on the face and not one little black mark under the eyes.. and lashes still looking great! Maybelline have done it again... they seem to always come out on the top with their mascaras.. first 'Great Lash' an all time favourite and now this, and what's better... it's cheap as chips!... priced at only Rs 290.. it's a steal... I would recommend you try this.

Mulain loo-ves Baz Luhrmann not only for making wonderful films...Moulin Rouge (my favourite of course), Strictly Ballroom, Romeo and Juliet.....but also for writing this poem / song......know it's been around for a long time....but it never fails to remind us all to live in the present....appreciate what we have....and knowing not to stress in life....there is no point!!! Epic chic says Nars about it's 15th anniversary make-up palettes. Contains perfect shades for a smokey eye and seductive statement lips. Great little compact palette to carry around, and we all know Nars is a fantastique brand www.narscosmetics.com (check out their other products too)...... Ben Nye's Silver Grey Hair Colour

Mulain does love Ben Nye as you all mu-st know by now...and here is another reason for loving them more....their temporary hair colours. Just fantastique, easy to apply with a superb finish. Ben Nye pioneered natural hair colouring believing it to be vital to completing a performers look. From film to fashion to theatre these colours can help any make-up artist to complete their look for a certain character. Unlike colour sprays which can be stiff after application, these colour liquids once dried are easily managed / styled, they also contain a setting agent which help them from flaking. Virginia MU used the Silver Grey Hair Colour recently and it added a different dimension to the fashion look she had created.....as we all know make-up and hair go hand-in-hand....so having these little gems on standby is great idea, especially if you're working in TVCs and film work.....add a touch of silver to the temples and you've aged your character, add streaks for a theatrical / fashion effect. We adore....Sharmila Tagore!

Mulain loo-ves Sharmila and Shammi.......and Lakme's liquid liner!

Mulain has been rushing between MUs Natasha and Virginia today....both testing for their TVCs they will be shooting. Natasha is still mid test and Virginia and MUs just finished. She had a great brief with a flamboyant, creative, inventive Brit director who kept saying...'bigger, bolder, brighter...let's go for it' .....we all loved him. Most creatives we work with say tone it down, this guy is the complete opposite.... Mulain loves his vision! What stood out today were the Sharmila Tagore inspired eye lines the MUs were creating........applying first with black aqua colour and a good brush (lip brush will do), then going over the top with Lakme's liquid liner for an added intensity (this doubled up for creating wonderful beauty spots too).....and lots of lashes my friends....can't wait to show you the snaps and the ad.

Mulain's top tip this weekend is.... try 'blotting papers'......for the professional and non-professional .....these little beauties are available from all over the world....in many different styles (Mulain is partial to the Japanese ones....am a sucker for packaging my friends).....and in super cute / stylish / minimal packs. They are great for absorbing excess oil from the face. So if you're worried about over-washing / cleansing your face.... or worried about over powdering your artists face in a desperate attempt to get rid of shine... try these little gems, they will remove that oily film which appears on your skin and makes you feel all yucky. They also don't disturb your make-up (as long as you just blot and not rub hard!!!!).....great for shoots too...carry in your set bags / pouches...MUs Virginia and Natasha have both used these on actors in the last year......they work like a treat. Non-fuss and easy.

These saviours will help you out in any situation, on any shoot, any bridal make-up, any fashion event...you name it.....Forgot your lip palette? Use your grease palette.....Change of brief? Use your grease palette.....Director suddenly wants a black eye? Use your grease palette...the MUs never leave home without them!

Mulain had a lovely day yesterday with MUs Virginia, Sara and Pooja....shooting for avant-garde hair magazine Estetica. This famous Italian hair magazine prints hair images that blow your mind...such fantastic looks are created....lovely work......check out their site.....

www.estetica.it/index.php?Ing=2 ........like most publications now, Estetica came to India and so we were working with L'Oreal and Toni & Guy hair teams supporting their hair designs with make-up. Yes the focus is on hair but that does n't mean make-up is not important....on the contrary....you have to support the hair teams and add in / design a make-up look that will make the finished image magical...a work of art....you mu-st look at the final piece and go WOW!

That is always our goal....

We got to work with lovely Kalki Koechlin (Dev-D fame), what a versatile face this lovely lady has....we went from a Vidal Sassoon / Barbarella inspired look to an 80s inspired fashion icon. Great fun to jump decades and always pushes one creatively. Virginia MU gave her a 60s inspired eyeline with a modern twist....matt, natural lips....tres simple....and of course great skin thanks to our fab Bobbi Brown cream base palette...what a finish it gives! The MUs love it...

Can't wait to see the April cover....will post when it comes out....hope your Mondays were good my friends.....

Ok...you may think that Mulain and the MUs are getting obsessed with Mademoiselle Gaga....we seem to write about her alot......but why not I ask you? The above LG shots are innovative, ecclectic, progressive, artistic. The thing is....it's just not LG that we are fascinated with....it's the creative process and team behind her look/s which get us so excited. So much design, passion, creative genius at work and at play......Mulain sees these photos and thinks....Andy Warhol, Penelope Tree, 'Carrie', Salvadore Dali, Else Schiaparelli, Vidal Sassoon, David Bailey, Debby Harry, Madonna, Queen (not the Queen my friends!), I see the future, the past, the present, Gloria Swanson, Punk, 80s Street style....I could go on....

Budget make-up tools!

Can't afford a 'proper make-up mixing palette'....use an old cd!

A proper metal spatula out of your budget....start with orange sticks!!...

Mulain is always distraught to hear of young aspiring make-up artists with no budget for materials and losing hope of ever having 'the perfect kit'....don't despair my friends....in this green / recessionista age we are living in anything goes. So Mulain is saying instead of chucking out old, scratched cds...re-use them as a make-up mixing palette? Can't afford a metal spatula?..... buy a packet of orange sticks to start with.....you 'ave to start somewhere non? Total cost would be..old cd + packet of orange sticks=6 Rs approximate. So you 've saved yourself money, helped the environment and plus you look cool and inventive. Not bad going...see where else you can be clever too. Sharing is caring...get together with some friends....par example.....between two of you buy the latest lipsticks around, divide them in half! MU Sara bought a pill box from a local medical shop and filled it with lipsticks....she now has the coolest, most cost-effective lip palette in town. Bravo Sara!

So my dears....never despair....there is always a solution.....a silver lining to every cloud.

The Taj Calendar March 2010!

Mulain loves this March page from the Taj Calendar 2010....make-up by our MU Natasha, hair by the loo-verly Adhuna from ace hair salon b:blunt. It reminds Mulain of fun and frolicks and that Spring is in the air! Have fun my friends in everything you do....so importante non?! From your nails, to your lips to your eyes, to your hair too.... enjoy what you do, make it creative, explore a new you. Have a good old Spring-clean with your make-up kit too.....chuck out / recycle / rejuvenate...wash your brushes....buy a fresh mascara!

You will see a difference and feel fantastique. All the MUs are busy today...Natasha, Xavier, Sara braving the Sun on an outdoor shoot....lots of sun-cream on I imagine...very sensible.

Chanel's Spring / Summer make-up collection 2010

Mulain is always up for a leetle bit of Chanel...loved trying all the new Spring / Summer range in Juhu's Dynamix Mall.....MUs Natasha and Virginia had a try before they watched 'Alice in Wonderful' at the PVR...a quick make-up shopping fix. The girls love love loved the new Spring collection as seen above....lovely nail polishes and the colours are muted chic....luxurious as always in a subtle and sophisticated way. Virginia fell in love with the taupe/grey colour nail polish named Attendu (see above)....Natasha not so convinced calling it 'murky'....it's a love/hate thing it seems.....but as Mulain will always tell you ....you cannot really hate anything Chanel do....it's love/love all the way!

Mulain of course loves Le Rouge! A face is not complete without it I feel. I am proud to say that MU Sara bought a lovely product at the weekend....a Ben Nye Rouge Wheel! What a divine selection of 6 creams all in one little pot! From Coral to pink to rose to beige, looks great on all skin tones......just loo-verly plus a loo-verly price, bargain at just under 1000 Rs! Brilliant brand, brilliant product...a great buy for your professional kit and personal too!
